This tiny sunken kitchen / bar was large enough for one person to work efficiently, preparing the cafés simple menu of coffee, toast, sandwhiches and curry/rice. While watching all tables, he engaged eye to eye with those sitting at the bar (normal chairs) and still managed to keep his work concealed due to proportions and viewing angles.

Traditional Upper-class homes featured many solid timber doors, as rooms often opened onto balconies encircling courtyards. Wooden thresholds were built to be stepped over, preventing evil spirits believed to travel along the floor from entering the home. These ornate, pivoting doors were held closed by sliding locks that sat in the raised cill.

Pointed out to me by a professor in HSLU, these 'light scoops' inconspicuously blend in with the surrounding ornate timberwork and medieval cityscape when observed from the street bellow. However, the buildings 1st floor, who's rooms generally receives the least sunlight in a narrow laneway, are bathed in reflected light.

Longboat Steering, Koh Lipe 05/2025

The unmistakable function of this simplistic, conspicuous steering mechanism appealed to me. While a pivoting engine partly controls the boat's direction, its main steering component, the rudder, is connected to a wheel by a rope loop. The rope gathers as the wheel turns, creating and releasing tension from port or starboard side.
